A Solo Exhibition by Steven Draper
The Loft Gallery, Karlo Estates Winery
28 July – 5 September 2011
Photographer’s Statement
“For the many years I flew aeroplanes all around the world, I effectively lived in the sky, spending thousands of hours dancing with the wind and the clouds. And even now my home and studio is a hill top in Prince Edward County offering an amazing 360 panoramic view of the sky.
From misty dawns to dramatic storms, the sky around us offers all extremes and sets the stage for the landscape below – This collection of poetic images, all photographed over the past 5 years from the ground, the air and also my polepics camera system, explores these moods from the unique eye of an artist, and a pilot and an in depth understanding of meteorology, light and the spirit of the sky.”
Karlo Estates
A winery, located in Prince Edward County, Karlo Estates is ideally situated close to the shores of Lake Ontario, creating moderating effects which help alleviate Canada’s cool climate. With latitude and soil similar to the Burgundy region of France, we produce great Canadian wines with distinctive terroir.
Thanks to limestone soils, hand crafting and low yields; expect delicate complexity in a lighter weight with a refined texture.
Karlo Estates joins the pioneering spirit to offer 100% premium Canadian wines in beautiful Prince Edward County. We are dedicated to bring you wine with character.

Artist Statement
“Focusing all the energy of a single moment into one space, my prints are not the end of the artistic process – they are the window where the journey deep into our minds begins.” [SD]
“The perspective I work with provides a freedom from the earth, yet remains intimate to everything we are all so familiar with – it is the angle from which we are the most creative, the angle where we take most pleasure and understanding from our surroundings.” [SD]

Comments:
“I had just four weeks notice to put together the images for what was my first gallery show. For a while things looked bleak. Upgrading photoshop to increase efficiency with some of the image work produced unexpected printer problems. By the time they were resolved, and boy did that take some work, ink supplies for the B9180 were very low. And of course the only supplier in Canada wasn’t going to rush the delivery!
To add to the fun some of the images are non standard frame sizes, and I discovered 2am in the morning wasn’t the time to master the art of glass cutting! Thankfully Lowes in Belleville were able to help, although when I arrived later with several more lites to trim up I think their glass cutting policy changed!
13 pieces were exhibited – yes a lucky number indeed as this show lead to becoming a member of Arts on Main Gallery and a second show in 2010.” [SD]
